Adonthell

Adonthell is an open-source development project with which I have gotten involved. We are writing a fantasy role-playing game which is inspired by things like the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, the Ultima games, and the Final Fantasy games.

My primary work is as a writer, for now. I've already published one piece, found in the Library, and expect to publish quite a few more as time passes. Much of my work, however, is behind the scenes, writing for the new release version: Adonthell 0.4. My Developer's Diary is probably the best public record of my involvement.

Check out the site, get the demo, grab some music, and if you're interested, get involved!

Just a little addition:

According to ESR, author of The Cathedral and the Bazaar, part of the power of the open source approach to programming is the opportunity for peer review. He's right. I don't do any coding for this project, but I can attest to the power of peer review. Even the backstory and concept pieces which I do are peer reviewed by the other members of the project. I have a certain amount of skill with and command of the English language, but that doesn't mean that I write perfectly all the time. Usually their suggestions make a good piece better, but occassionally I'll goof up. Then, as I've experienced with a certain as-yet-unreleased bit of background, their 'bugfixes' make a half-baked bit of writing edib^H^H^Hreadable. Thanks fellas.

A lot has happened since I last updated this page. I've gone from being a minor part of the development team to being the primary writer. We all work on this in our spare time, such as it is, so our core team, the active team, and the orbitting satellites all seem to change places from time to time.

Work on the project has entered a new phase, and perhaps a new set of phases. Some time ago, we ran into problems with the cgi on adonthell.linuxgames.com. The old DevDiary died. I somehow found a way to revive it, at least in part, on Endor. I tried to make it part of a new initiative in bringing everything together. I called it the PlotWeb. It looked like a good idea, and it is a decent stand-in for an archive. I've stored a lot of our old documentation here.

Some time last year, Ingo Ruhnke suggested we build a Wiki in order to centralize the information. So we are. Kai and I are the primary maintainers of the Wiki for now, but I hope to see some of the other core team members join the Wiki-raising.

Another update, long overdue, and intended primarily as a wrapper for the following link: The Adonthell toolchain and build process for Win32 is here
